A Letter to Our Ecosystem

A Letter to Our Ecosystem

Year of growth and expansion As the year comes to a close, I can’t help but feel proud and grateful for everything we’ve accomplished together in 2024. It’s been a truly special year for ROCKIT and Lithuania’s growing fintech and innovation community. This year, we took some big steps forward. We expanded beyond our home in Vilnius by launching Startup Acceleration Programs in Kaunas and Klaipėda. These programs have opened up new doors for startups in Central and Western Lithuania, creating fresh opportunities and supporting the next generation of talented entrepreneurs across the country. Another highlight of 2024 was seeing our signature Fintech Day conference grow into Baltic Fintech Days . This transformation was possible thanks to our collaboration with amazing partners like Nordic Fintech Magazine, Fintech Latvia Association, and Finance Estonia. Together, we’re building something bigger — a place where the brightest minds and key players in Baltic fintech can connect, share ideas, and move the industry forward. Our goal is simple: to create the most exciting and meaningful fintech experience in the region. We want to bring together innovators, industry leaders, and decision-makers to spark fresh ideas, foster collaboration, and explore the future of financial technologies. None of this would have been possible without the support of our incredible partners, like VISA, Mastercard, Accenture, and our friends at the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, Invest Lithuania, and the Agency of Innovation. Working together, we’ve been able to shine an even brighter light on Lithuania’s place in the global fintech scene. By teaming up, we’ve shared valuable knowledge, hosted inspiring events, and given startups the tools they need to grow and lead on the global stage. This year, we also supported 45 startups  from all kinds of industries — from renewable energy and AI to health tech. These startups have hit some amazing milestones, like building the Baltics’ largest solar energy park and breaking new ground with AI-powered HR solutions and health innovations. Seeing their success is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. But the truth is, none of this would have happened without you . Whether you were a partner, supporter, or a friendly face at one of our events — you made a difference. Thank you for being part of our journey, for sharing your insights, and for helping us grow this vibrant community. Your support means more than you know. As we look to 2025, we’re more excited than ever. Let’s keep this momentum going, keep innovating, and keep supporting one another. Together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. Wishing you a joyful holiday season filled with warmth, happiness, and plenty of time with the people you love. Here’s to an exciting, successful, and inspiring 2025! With gratitude and warm wishes, Lina and the whole ROCKIT team

2024: A Year of Success for Lithuanian Startups, Powered by ROCKIT

2024: A Year of Success for Lithuanian Startups, Powered by ROCKIT

Lithuania’s thriving startup ecosystem has reached impressive new heights in 2024, with ROCKIT playing a vital role in driving innovation, scaling businesses, and creating global opportunities. As the region’s leading Fintech and Sustainable Innovation Hub, ROCKIT has empowered startups across industries, from renewable energy to AI and health tech, through its transformative acceleration programs. Garmio’s Inspiring Journey One of this year's standout successes is Garmio, a startup that embodies the spirit of persistence and innovation. After joining ROCKIT’s pre-accelerator program at the last moment, Garmio claimed the main prize. Later they continued its winning streak by taking the top spot in the Kickstart Lab program hosted by Inovacijų agentūra and Jaunaragiai and won the prize of 10k. Reflecting on their journey, the Co-Founder at Garmio shared: "We were the last to apply, and we are super happy with it! I don’t think there is a thing that we would change. The one thing I heard from a team is that the investors themselves were a bit lazy with actual opportunity seeking." Empowering Startups Through Acceleration ROCKIT’s Highway Acceleration Program supported 45 startups in 2024, providing mentorship, funding access, and networking opportunities. Here are some of the most notable achievements: Soliport: Built the largest solar energy park in the Baltic region, advancing Lithuania’s renewable energy goals. SensePilot: Secured a prestigious grant of 10K through the EIT Health InnoStars program to innovate in health tech. Greenie started their first pilot project at Vilnius airport to help travelers figure  out the right bin for their waste in just a few seconds. Progressa.ai : Launched its first AI-powered employee, setting new standards in HR tech. Vestimus and Momentha started their apps which is a great achievement in their startup journey.  ROCKIT’s Broader Impact ROCKIT organized 16 major events in 2024, fostering collaboration and thought leadership, while 100+  mentorship connections provided startups with expert guidance. With 6 startups represented internationally, Lithuania’s innovation story reached a global audience in the best innovation conferences: TechChill, Barcelona Smart City, and Tech BBQ. Reflections from Startups The structured and supportive nature of the programs has been a critical factor in the success of many participants. Inga Šakalienė, Co-Founder at UGC Europe, reflected on her experience: "The program was truly perfectly structured, with each lecture being incredibly valuable. I appreciated how everything was gradually explored in depth. This approach helped us better understand where, as a team, we need to put in more effort." Looking Ahead to 2025 As ROCKIT moves forward, the focus remains on driving progress in renewable energy, AI integration, and global partnerships. With a clear vision and a proven track record, ROCKIT is not just accelerating startups—it’s redefining Lithuania’s startup ecosystem as a global leader. Congratulations to all the trailblazing innovators who made 2024 an extraordinary year!

"Bridging Gaps: Marijus Andrijauskas on Lithuania’s Startup Expansion"

"Bridging Gaps: Marijus Andrijauskas on Lithuania’s Startup Expansion"

Despite global economic challenges, Lithuania's startup ecosystem demonstrated resilience and growth. By 2023, the country had over 800 active startups, employing more than 16,000 people and startups raised a total of €272 million.  Notably, the average investment per startup grew to €10 million, highlighting a focus on larger deals and sustainable growth. The tech ecosystem saw significant investments in sectors such as cybersecurity, energy, and biotech, with standout companies like Nord Security and PVcase, each securing $100 million in funding. Although the overall amount decreased, Lithuania remained one of the few European countries to experience an increase in investments by September 2023, alongside Romania and Luxembourg. The ecosystem continues to expand, supported by initiatives from venture capital and tech hubs, such as Rockit , aimed at nurturing early-stage startups. This focus on profitability and innovation signals a promising future for Lithuania’s entrepreneurial landscape. We are happy to share our partner’s FIRSTPICK insights about Lithuanian startup ecosystem and we welcome you to a quick interview with Marijus Andrijauskas, Partner at FIRSTPICK. Marijus, how do you see the evolution of Lithuania’s startup ecosystem in the next 3 to 5 years? Do you think the gap between startups in Vilnius and other regions will change? Lithuania’s startup ecosystem has grown rapidly in recent years and continues to head in the right direction. Over the next 3 to 5 years, we can expect even more collaboration between startups, venture funds, accelerators, hubs, associations, and business angel networks. The growing involvement of institutional players is also creating a strong foundation for future growth. With improved access to capital, mentoring, and talent, Lithuania is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for innovation. While Vilnius remains the startup epicenter due to its concentration of resources and talent, other cities like Kaunas and Klaipėda are gaining momentum. Kaunas benefits from its technical universities, and Klaipėda is becoming a promising tech hub, attracting founders and entrepreneurs. Interestingly, coastal cities like Palanga and Nida are turning into seasonal startup hubs during the summer, offering a great quality of life and attracting innovators. Smaller cities still need to build unique offerings through university partnerships or specialized infrastructure, but government programs are already helping to support regional development. Initiatives from ecosystem players like Rockit are essential in spreading resources and leveling the playing field for startups across the country. What strengths set Lithuania’s startup ecosystem apart, and how does VC and communities like ROCKIT support this growth? To avoid gaps like those seen in Estonia, it’s crucial to focus on nurturing early-stage startups now. Encouraging and enabling wanna-be founders to make their first attempts, without fear of failure, will help maintain a healthy pipeline of new ventures. Despite economic challenges that may deter senior professionals, investing in early-stage development is vital. Hubs like Rockit are playing an invaluable role in addressing these needs. They are not only focused on Vilnius but are also extending their reach to regional areas, ensuring that this culture of innovation and entrepreneurship can spread throughout the country. By bringing together the resources and networks necessary to support budding entrepreneurs, Rockit is helping to cultivate a new generation of startups that will continue to fuel Lithuania’s growth. As you mentioned, ROCKIT's Pre-Acceleration Program focuses on early-stage startups. What are the key factors that help these programs prepare startups for investment? As a VC, we screen hundreds of startups, and typically only around 2% are ready for investment. Many promising teams fall short, not because their ideas are weak, but due to gaps in preparation, validation, understanding of numbers, and familiarity with the VC landscape. This is where pre-acceleration programs, like ROCKIT’s, play a crucial role. These programs equip startups with the knowledge and tools they need to bridge these gaps. ROCKIT’s Pre-Acceleration Program is a great example, offering structure and guidance for early-stage founders who aim to pursue VC funding later. Not only does it increase their chances of securing investment, but it also helps founders evaluate whether entrepreneurship is the right path for them. Marijus, in your opinion, what sectors within the Lithuanian startup ecosystem are currently underserved or have the most untapped potential, and how can accelerators or public initiatives address this? One sector with untapped potential in Lithuania is AI. While we’ve seen some movement and ideas developing, much of it revolves around generative AI, and we’re still catching up with the broader AI wave. However, this is the right direction, and I believe AI will soon become a powerful sector in our ecosystem. To fully unlock this potential, accelerators and public initiatives need to focus on enabling and supporting AI innovation. By concentrating our efforts, we can foster a stronger AI presence in Lithuania, ensuring the sector flourishes in the coming years. Thank you Marijus for such and insightful interview! A pleasure to have you as our partner and mentor in our acceleration programs!

Five years of “Rockit”: growing startup value and regional expansion

Five years of “Rockit”: growing startup value and regional expansion

We enter a new phase as it completes our fifth year of operations. The centre, which was established in Vilnius and unites regional and international startups, is gaining ground in other Lithuanian cities, encouraging local startups to set up technology businesses, according to a press release. According to Lina Žemaitytė-Kirkman, CEO of “Rockit”, in the five years that the centre has been operating, the Lithuanian fintech ecosystem has grown considerably, with the number of fintech companies approaching 300. This, she says, is due to a strong partnership between businesses and a local government.   “In addition, the fact that international accelerators such as “Plug and Play” are coming to the country, bringing their international circle of mentors, investors and speakers, shows Lithuania's attractiveness for the creation and development of fast-growing technology businesses. It is therefore natural that the next step is to strengthen the country's entire startup ecosystem, with a greater focus on other regions,” says L. Žemaitytė-Kirkman.   The value of Lithuania's startup ecosystem has grown more than 7 times in five years, from €1.9 billion in 2018 to €13.7 billion last year, according to “Dealroom’s” data.   “The number of startups creating sustainable innovations has grown by a tenth in the last year alone, and among all members of the “Rockit” community, nearly a third of them. We are therefore delighted to develop our cooperation with “Rockit”, the centre for sustainable innovation, to promote the creation and fostering of a sustainable society,” says Remy Salters, Head of the Finance Division at “Swedbank”.   Together with “Swedbank”, the Centre for Financial Technology and Innovation “Rockit” organises the “Sustainability Forum”, which brings together startups developing sustainability technologies. The event, which has been held for two consecutive years, is also under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania.   The activity and strength of the community are demonstrated by the annual “Lithuanian Fintech Awards”, which recognise and reward the sector and its achievements. This year's fourth edition of the Awards featured the only one of its kind so far - the Lithuanian Fintech Map. It divides all 277 fintech companies in the country into 10 different categories - payments, digital banking, savings and investments, lending, etc. Encourage the development of startups in the regions Although based in Vilnius, “Rockit” has been helping startups in other Lithuanian cities to enter broader business markets since spring this year. According to the CEO of the centre L. Žemaitytė-Kirkman, creating favourable conditions for startups in Central and Western Lithuania and encouraging the development of product ideas will also help to reduce the regional divide.   “Our mission is to build a stronger and more vibrant regional startup ecosystem and to empower entrepreneurial people to reach their full potential. With Rockit's international experience, extensive network of contacts, mentors and companies, we are ready to accelerate every startup's journey towards success,” says the CEO of “Rockit”.   The “Startup Acceleration and Incubation Programme 2024-2026” has been launched to encourage technology centres to take action to create the right conditions for startups and to promote the development of their product ideas. It is being implemented by Rockit with funding from the Innovation Agency.   The “Startup Acceleration and Incubation Programme 2024-2026” has a number of key objectives, including the organisation of different stages of startup programme cycles, from the earliest stage through to the readiness to raise capital. Business and science intensives will also be organised to commercialise scientific solutions and promote the creation of science-intensive businesses.   As foreseen in the project strategy, “Rockit’s” offices will open in Kaunas and Klaipėda shortly. Each of them will be equipped with spaces for incubating startups: about 20 workplaces, event spaces, etc. These co-working spaces will allow young and startup technology companies to gain knowledge and experience not only from Lithuanian but also from foreign experts, and to put it into practice.   The centres in Kaunas and Klaipėda will also provide incubation and acceleration services for young technology companies in the region. At least 60 new startups are expected to emerge in Western and Central Lithuania over the three years of the program.

Marijus Andrijauskas, a partner at FIRSTPICK, emphasizes the importance of well-rounded development for startups: “While funding is crucial, the true success factors lie in a startup’s idea, business model, and team. An excessive focus on funding alone can often be detrimental, as it might limit the time spent validating the idea and analyzing market needs. This highlights the pivotal role of incubation and acceleration programs like ours, which provide valuable knowledge, mentorship, and resources essential for testing ideas in real-market conditions.” Join Us and Grow Don’t miss this chance to accelerate your startup’s growth and prepare to make a significant impact.
